Pointer Club and English Setter Club Training Day 26th March 2022
Report
The Pointer Club & The English Setter Club held a Pointer & Setter Training day on Saturday 26th March at Yad Moss Moor, Alston, Cumbria. These training days are designed to attract newcomers to our great sport, provide education and training support with a potential outcome of being competent to enter a field trial.
15 participants and their Pointers, Gordon Setters, English Setters & Irish Setters met up with the trainers and following introductions and a general overview of the day we all headed up the hill. The weather was bright and dry with a light wind. The groups split and went to different areas of the moor enabling everyone to work into the wind. General moorland and grouse management was explained followed by basic training principles. Practical application was then employed and all the dogs were able to have a couple of runs in the morning.
After lunch back at the cars the group headed out to watch a demonstration of quartering and game finding by four pointers handles by Terry Harris and Carole Brown. This was complemented by commentary from the trainers in the gallery. There followed another opportunity for the handlers to run their dogs once more on the hill and revisit what they had learnt in the morning. The participants then received a pack of information for them to take home, read and practice!
Thank you to everyone that supported the day. Special thanks to Yad Moss Moor Shoot, represented by William & Elaine Town and Charles (head keeper) and thank you to the trainers David Hall, Terry Harris, Steve Lound & Carole Brown and Fiona Kirk for her superb organisation.
