Training Days

Picture

In addition to the field trials we also hold up to three training days for Pointers and Setters per year. The aim of these days are to help educate & encourage newcomers to our sport. They are designed to help owners and their dogs to gain an insight into the background and basic training of a working Pointer or Setter and also understand more about the quarry and management of the ground that we work on. We hope that by attending these days that some participants are able to progress to a standard capable of entering a Field Trial.

Training Day Report 15/03/2024
The Pointer Club & The English Setter Club
The Pointer Club and English Setter Club held their Training Day on 15th March on
Yad Moss moor in Cumbria.
Despite the bad forecast we were extremely lucky with weather; it was a little damp
and misty at times, but we did see some sunshine and there was a good steady
breeze for the dogs.
The 15 participants were divided into 3 groups of 5 with trainers David Hall, Terry
Harris and Steve Lound.
Before we started William Town, shoot captain gave an overview of the moor, the
management and how the management of the moor for shooting and also by the
farmer helped not only the grouse, but also the red listed species found on the moor
and all the other flora and fauna.
All the participants were given the opportunity to have at least 2 runs with their dogs
in the morning, then after lunch Terry and David gave a demonstration of how dogs
would be expected to work in a Field Trial. Their dogs worked as a brace showcasing
the groundwork, the production of the birds and also a back.
The groups then set off again and worked their dogs with their trainers.  Throughout
the day there was the opportunity for participants to ask questions about the dog
work and about the moor in general.
Hopefully everyone found the day helpful and inspiring.  It is great to see some of the
people who have attended our previous Training Days progressing and running their
dogs in Field Trials and great to see everyone enjoying working their dogs for what
they were bred for.
Grateful thanks must go to The Yad Moss shooting syndicate, especially Shoot
captain William Town and keeper Charles Woods for allowing us access to the moor
and guiding us through the day.  Thanks must also go to Elaine Town and Robert
Shoplin-Reed who came and helped on the day. Last but by no means least we
would like to thank the Trainers: David, Terry and Steve who have been so generous
with their time and knowledge.

TTraining Day Report 01/04/2023
The Pointer Club & The English Setter Club

The Pointer Club & The English Setter Club held a Pointer & Setter Training day on Saturday 1st April 2023 at Yad Moss Moor, Alston, Cumbria. These training days are designed to attract newcomers to our great sport, provide education and training support with a potential outcome of being competent to enter a field trial.
15 participants and their Pointers, Gordon Setters, English Setters & Irish Setters met up with the trainers and following introductions and a general overview of the day we all headed up the hill. The early morning fog lifted and the weather remained cloudy with intermittent light showers and a good breeze. The groups split and went to different areas of the moor enabling everyone to work into the wind.  General moorland and grouse management was explained followed by basic training principles. Practical application was then employed and all the dogs were able to have a couple of runs in the morning.
After lunch back at the cars the group headed out to watch a demonstration of quartering and game finding by two pointers handled by Terry Harris and Carole Brown. This was complemented by commentary from the trainers in the gallery. There followed another opportunity for the handlers to run their dogs once more on the hill and revisit what they had learnt in the morning. The participants then received a pack of information for them to take home, read and practice! I am pleased to say four of the participants have already entered and competed in field
trials following attending these days. Thank you to everyone that supported the day. Special thanks to Yad Moss Moor Shoot, represented by William & Elaine Town and Charles (head keeper) and thank you to the trainers David Hall, Terry Harris, Steve Lound & Carole Brown and Fiona Kirk for her superb
