THE POINTER CLUB SHOW GUNDOG WORKING
CERTIFICATE DAY JULY 2024
A Show Gundog Working Certificate Day was held for Pointers and Setters on
Sunday 28 th July 2024 on the Abbeystead Estate, Lancashire by the kind permission
of the Duke of Westminster.
The judges for the day were Meryl Asbury (A Panel) and Sara Chichester (A Panel).
9 dogs and 9 handlers took part with 3 Pointers, 2 Irish Setters, 3 Irish Red and
White Setters and 1 English Setter.
Everyone met at Doeholme Farm, the Head Pheasant Keeper’s yard, where there
was ample parking and a large room which is used for education and training staff on
the Estate.
There was an introduction to the Estate and the two underkeepers, Max and Aiden,
from Meryl Asbury, President of the Pointer Club. After refreshments we proceeded
to the grouse moor.
The weather was sunny and hot with a variable wind. These conditions made it a bit
difficult for the dogs, but we tried wherever possible to walk into the wind.
This has been a difficult year for grouse with a cold wet spring and summer at prime
hatching time and many estates are reporting extreme reductions in grouse
numbers. We were lucky we went to an area where we saw more than adequate
numbers of birds and every dog had opportunity of them on their runs.
There were three SGWCs awarded with good performances from all three.
Sh.Ch. Alanea Holly Fern at Charnborough IRWSB owned by Mr & Mrs T Sherratt,
handled by Tony. This changed her title to Champion, subject to Kennel Club
approval.
Rubethan Cake It or Leave It IRWSB owned and handled by Miss R Skene
Sharnphilly Gingerbread PB owned and handled by Ms N Klaiber
We returned to the yard where the awards were presented by Underkeeper Max
Hickling, the Steward and Gun for the day.
Many thanks to all involved, and a special thanks to my helpers on the day.

The Pointer Club held their Show Gundog Working Certificate Day for Pointers and Setters on Saturday 5th August, with the kind permission of the Lord Bolton of Wensley, at Apedale moor, Wensleydale.
The day had originally been scheduled for Sunday 23rd July, but due to the forecast of heavy rain this was cancelled. The day started with some training followed by the test for the SGWC.
The day was wet but the dogs proved enthusiastic, as did the handlers. There were plenty of grouse to test the dogs, all really well grown, and still in coveys. They were a good test for the dogs.
The judges were Terry Harris and Meryl Asbury
Two dogs achieved the SGWC
Mr D A Sayer’s Settersay Thunder (Irish Red and White Setter)
Mrs S Anderson Rowell’s Raigmore Limelight at Daledancer (Pointer)
After a very good morning on the hill there was a well earned retirement to the Wheatsheaf at Carperby for the presentations.
Thank you to all who took part

The judges were Ms Meryl Asbury (A Panel) and Ms Sara Chichester (A Panel).
